VersaFAM version 1.14
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
(and other ramblings)
Greetings, fellow sysop.
Before I get to the nitty-gritty details of registering your copy of
VersaFAM, including the advantages of doing so, I'd like to bend your
ear a bit to explain why I'm breaking with tradition and asking you to
pay for this software.
At the time of this writing, I've been a Fidonet sysop for almost four
years. In that time, I've written 13 publicly-released software programs
and am currently working on a 14th. I've spent literally hundreds of
hours testing, debugging and improving programs like VersaFAM, BBSTunes,
Filex and TIA, laboring to make them fast, compact and "bullet-proof".
I've spent more hours on the phone to sysops all over the country,
delivering beta versions and getting feedback on what new features to
include, as well as how to strengthen existing features and eliminate
bugs. I make it sound like work, but it was (and is) really a lot of
fun. I get great enjoyment and satisfaction out of programming for
fellow sysops.
Unfortunately, enjoyment and satisfaction don't pay the bills....
After 4 years of continuous use, my equipment is beginning to show the
strain. My hard drives are starting to make strange noises, producing
"sector not found" errors and the like with increasing frequency. My
monochrome monitor is starting to flicker. In short, I'm looking at a
considerable monetary outlay, probably in the very near future.
Considering the current economic situation, it's very unlikely I'll
be able to justify that kind of expense to myself, let alone to
my *wife*. My company has already gone through 2 rounds of layoffs,
and I'm in a Training Department position, historically not the most
secure type of work during hard times. I've started looking for part-
time employment, in the event worst comes to worst. The old adage
"time is money" is beginning to take on a grim new meaning.
The honest fact is, unless I'm able to justify the time and expense
associated with this "hobby", I may very shortly be unable to continue
my sysoping and programming pursuits, a very real possibility that
doesn't exactly thrill me.
That's why I'm asking you to consider donating $15.00 to register your
copy of VersaFAM. Even if only 20 or 30 of the over 10,000 Fidonet
sysops register, it'll still buy a new hard drive or monitor, and allow
me to continue to bring innovative software products to you.
For your $15.00 outlay, you'll receive:
a) A version of VersaFAM customized with your name.
b) Free VersaFAM updates, delivered via Fidonet or U.S. Snail.
c) My heartfelt thanks and continued hard work on your behalf.
In the event you feel overly generous and donate $30.00 or more, I'll
add in the complete VersaFAM Turbo Pascal source code, as well.
To register, please send check or money order to:

Please include your name (as you'd like it to appear in your custom
VersaFAM copy), node number, mailing address and voice phone number.
Finally, I know there are those of you out there who'll accuse me of
whining about my problems, who'll say that with this kind of an attitude,
the telecommunications world is probably better off without me. That
may or may not be true, I'll let you decide.... :-)) Right or wrong,
this is the only way that I can think of to justify continuing to do
the kind of work that gives me such pleasure and satisfaction.
Whether you choose to do anything about it is totally up to you.
Please consider this offer, and take care.
